On October 6, 2014, in a surprise move that showed implicit support for marriage equality, the Supreme Court of the United States declined to hear three appeals from the federal appeals courts dealing with decisions to strike down bans on same-sex marriage. Though there are still several states in the U.S. where same-sex marriage is banned, progress is being made towards equality. Canada, in contrast, was a leader in legally recognizing same-sex marriage nationwide, becoming the fourth country in the world to do so with the enactment the Civil Marriage Act on July 20, 2005. Same-sex marriage in some Canadian provinces was recognized well before this date.
