Nelligan O’Brien Payne’s Wills and Estates Practice Group is proud to be a supporter of the BeADonor.ca campaign, which has partnered with the Trillium Gift of Life Network, ServiceOntario and RecycleMe.org. The goal of BeADonor.ca is to encourage all Ontarians to become registered organ and tissue donors, and to raise awareness about the importance of life-saving organ and tissue donation.

Why register as an organ and tissue donor?

Registering to be an organ and tissue donor may be the greatest gift you ever give. There are thousands of people in Ontario waiting for organ and tissue transplants, but one person dies every three days while waiting. One organ donor can save eight lives, yet only 25% of Ontarians have registered their consent to be a donor.

When planning for end of life issues, it is just as important to make sure you have registered to donate your organs and tissue, as it is to have a valid will. Organ and tissue donor registration facilitates a person’s decision about an important end of life issue, and removes the burden from your family to make the choice for you after your death. Often, families decline organ donation when they do not know their loved ones’ wishes.

If your hope is that a life-saving transplant would be available for your friends and loved ones, please register today.

Requirements to become a registered donor

Many people incorrectly believe that their advanced age or medical history makes them ineligible to be an organ or tissue donor. The physical and medical condition at the time of death will determine which organs and tissue can be donated. Any person who is 16 years of age or older, regardless of their medical condition, are encouraged to register their consent for organ and tissue donation in Ontario.

How to become a registered donor

Nelligan O’Brien Payne is asking our staff, family and friends to register their consent for organ and tissue donation.

The paper card you may carry in your wallet is not reliable to prove your commitment to organ and tissue donation. Donors must register with ServiceOntario to ensure that their wishes are known – and it only takes 2 minutes.

To become an official organ and tissue donor, please visit our page on the beadonor.ca website, and follow the simple steps provided on the page to register.

Thank you for making the generous decision to register as a donor so that more lives can be saved.
