The Indigenous Law Group at NOP is pleased to announce two recent additions to its team: Michel (Mike) Nolet and Katiana Fleck.
Mike is an associate who brings with him not only a comprehensive background in Indigenous matters and law, but also real personal experience.
Mike is Mohawk from Kanesatake, Quebec, and witnessed the 1990 Oka Crisis first-hand as a child. These experiences have instilled a passion in Mike to fight for Aboriginal rights and self-government.
While attending the University of Ottawa, Mike was a member of the Aboriginal Law Students’ Association, and participated in the Nelligan O’Brien Payne LLP First Year Moot Court Competition and the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot. He received his J.D. in 2013, and his LL.L. in 2014, graduating magna cum laude.
Mike completed his articles with two top-ranked Aboriginal law boutique firms, first in Ottawa and then Montreal, where he stayed on as an associate lawyer before joining the firm.
As well as his legal experience, which includes Specific Claims Tribunal and Indian Residential Schools work, Mike has worked in federal and Indigenous governments on policy and finances.
In his spare time, Mike enjoys reading and exercising, and loves spending time outdoors hunting and fishing.
Katiana joins us after significant experience as a law clerk and executive assistant in government and university.
Katiana obtained a degree in History and French from Queen’s University before going on to a law clerk program at St. Lawrence College, where she graduated with distinction. Her studies reflect Katiana’s life experience of living overseas, where she was immersed in history while studying French. Katiana has also worked as a guide on the Haunted Walk and knows all the historic places of Kingston, Ontario.
A long-time equestrian, Katiana has her own horse and continues to practise and compete in show jumping.
Katiana is one of the two administrative assistants in the Indigenous Law Group who can help clients find what they need or direct their inquiries to the appropriate lawyers.
For any legal issues you may be facing, our Indigenous Law Group will be able to provide assistance to you.
