Brent Marks is an associate lawyer at Nelligan Law in our Labour and Employment practice groups.

Brent is passionate about safeguarding the interests of people from all walks of life, while fighting injustice and discrimination in the workplace and beyond. Brent advises labour unions and employees on labour and employment, administrative, constitutional, and human rights law.

Brent draws upon his diverse international experience to be a versatile and adaptable advocate for his clients. Before private practice with Nelligan, Brent worked as in-house counsel with a Berlin tech start-up and with a non-profit legal clinic. He was also advocated for refugee claimants as a legal consultant with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in South Africa, as an Alumni Fellow with the University of Toronto Faculty of Law’s International Human Rights Program.  He articled with a Toronto union-side labour firm.

Brent completed a Master of Laws at the University of Toronto where he focused on public sector labour law and the intersection of technology, law, and society. While studying in Toronto he volunteered with Downtown Legal Services and represented students accused of academic misconduct. He holds a law degree from the University of Sussex where he was an avid and successful moot participant and a volunteer with Street Law, a student-led clinical law project.

Brent is originally from Toronto and has lived a nomadic life with stints in Berlin, Johannesburg, and most recently in Nairobi, with his wife and son, in support of her career with an international organization. Before becoming a lawyer, Brent was a musician and toured the globe playing the bass. He loves hunting for new music and old records, enjoys running, and a good book with a better coffee.
