Throughout his career, Jim has practised primarily in the areas of labour and employment law and health law. He spent most of his career prior to joining Nelligan Law at a large national law firm.
Jim’s practice involves providing advice on every aspect of the employment relationship, including hiring, employee terminations, discipline, accommodation, human rights and occupational health and safety (including workplace violence and harassment). He regularly advises on the necessity and adequacy of workplace policies.
Jim represents employers and employees in wrongful and constructive dismissal claims, grievance arbitrations, human rights proceedings, employment standards proceedings and occupational health, cannabis legalization and safety prosecutions.
Jim’s health law experience is equally extensive. Over the years, he has provided much regulatory and risk management advice to healthcare institutions and healthcare practitioners, and represented them in professional negligence claims and other matters. He also has extensive experience with privacy matters.
Jim has presented at numerous employment law and health law conferences, and has also instructed university students in labour and employment law and health law. Recently, Jim was recognized by his peers in the legal community for his work in labour and employment law and listed in the 2020 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada.
Jim is fluently bilingual and represents his clients in both official languages.
Jim is dedicated to his clients and works hard to solve their legal issues, which he tackles in a thorough and thoughtful manner. He prides himself on providing practical advice and not losing sight of the big picture.
Jim is married and has three young sons. When he is not running around after his kids, he likes to keep active with running, cycling, hiking and skiing.
