Zakia Jahan

Lawyer

Zakia Jahan is an associate in the labour and employment law group.

She advises unions and employees on employment, labour, administrative and human rights law. She also deals with incidences of workplace injuries and represents clients before the Workplace Insurance and Safety Board (WSIB). Zakia understands that navigating workplace issues can be overwhelming and is there to guide you through every step of the way. She is attentive, responsive and passionate.

Zakia grew up in Montreal, Quebec and received her Juris Doctor as well as Bachelor of Civil Law from McGill University’s Faculty of Law. During law school, she worked as a research assistant to Professor Adelle Blackett focusing primarily on different workplace issues within both national and international frameworks. Through this experience, Zakia gained a deep appreciation of employment/labour law and unionization as vehicles to foster agency within a relationship traditionally entrenched with power imbalances. She explored her interests further by conducting research and writing papers on her findings on the intersections of international human rights law, labour standards and corporate social responsibility within the global supply chain, with a focus on the garment industry in Bangladesh.

After law school, Zakia articled with the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario where she represented vulnerable members of marginalized communities in a variety of legal matters. She is a tenacious advocate for her clients and takes the time to really understand their needs.

Outside of work, Zakia enjoys café-hopping and cooking meals for her friends and family.
