What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychological response to trauma that disrupts a person’s ability to function normally. It can be triggered by witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event, such as a car accident or other serious accidents. While not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, for some, the emotional aftermath lingers, often for years.

Common Signs of PTSD

PTSD can manifest in various ways, and its symptoms typically fall into the following four main categories:

  1. Intrusive Memories: People with PTSD often experience recurring, unwanted memories of the traumatic event. These may include flashbacks, where the individual feels as though they are reliving the trauma. Nightmares and intense emotional or physical reactions to reminders of the event are also common.
  2. Avoidance: Many individuals with PTSD will go to great lengths to avoid reminders of their trauma. This can include avoiding certain places, people, or activities that may trigger memories of the event. They may also avoid talking or thinking about the trauma, hoping to suppress any emotional responses.
  3. Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: People with PTSD may develop negative beliefs about themselves, others, or the world around them. This can lead to feelings of hopelessness and difficulty maintaining relationships. Social withdrawal, numbness, detachment, or an inability to feel positive emotions are also common symptoms.
  4. Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions: PTSD can cause heightened emotional responses, such as feeling easily startled, tense, or “on edge.” Irritability, angry outbursts, and difficulty sleeping or concentrating are also common signs. Individuals may also engage in self-destructive behavior. These hyperarousal symptoms can significantly impact day-to-day functioning.
