Lawyer Lanise Hayes succeeded in arguing for imprisonment in a recent by-law case. The accused was being prosecuted in 12 files under the community alcohol by-law. The charges included public intoxication, possession of alcohol and sale of alcohol, all of which are prohibited by the community. Lanise requested imprisonment of between 10 and 20 days in each of the files.
Defence counsel argued for concurrent time, which would have meant that the accused would have to serve only 20 days. Lanise argued that because of the numerous prior convictions, the accused’s failure to correct his conduct and the impact this has had on the community, that the accusations be taken seriously and punished accordingly. The judge agreed with her position.
