Nelligan O’Brien Payne and the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, invite you to attend the Sixth Catherine Helen MacLean Memorial Lecture, “Towards a Human Rights Foreign Policy for Canada” with guest speaker Professor Irwin Cotler.
The lecture is supported by the Catherine Helen MacLean Memorial Fund at the University of Ottawa. Family, friends and colleagues of Ms. MacLean established the fund to advance the awareness of issues related to labour law and human rights law, two pillars in her impressive legal career. Nelligan O’Brien Payne is proud to be a supporter of this memorial lecture.
Professor Cotler, P.C., O.C. is emeritus professor of law at McGill University and was the director of its Human Rights Program from 1973 until 1999. He served as the Member of Parliament for Mount Royal from 1999 to 2015 and as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 2003 until 2006. On February 5, 2014, Professor Cotler announced that he was not running in the upcoming federal election. He said he would however remain “active in public life, lecturing and writing on the issues of the day, advancing the causes of human rights and international justice, and advocating on behalf of political prisoners.” In that connection, he recently founded The Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights. We are delighted that he has accepted our invitation to speak.
